The sermon begins by introducing the idea of a cruciform life, which is a life shaped by the self-giving love of Christ revealed in his death on the cross. This theme will shape the entire Philippians series.

It opens with a reflection on Jürgen Moltmann’s encounter with God in suffering, setting the stage for understanding the cross not as defeat but as the heart of God’s character and mission.

The message then turns to Philippians 1:1–2, noting Paul and Timothy’s identification as servants of Christ Jesus and their greeting to the believers in Philippi, including overseers and deacons. Paul’s use of “servants” in a culture obsessed with status highlights a Christ-shaped identity of humble service.

His greeting of grace and peace from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ transforms an ordinary salutation into an affirmation of divine gift and presence. These opening verses establish the identity of both writer and readers as holy ones called into a life conformed to Christ’s self-giving way.
